Many women like to wear the latest styles when it comes to clothing, accessories, and shoes. However, there have been many fashion trends in the past that have not been the most comfortable to wear. It can be amazing to see what pain and discomfort some women will put themselves through simply for the sake of feeling like they are fashionable.
The first thing that comes to mind is corsets. I can not imagine anything more restrictive and uncomfortable that being cinched up into a corset for hours at a time. Wearing a corset probably felt similar to wearing a straight jacket. Another more recent fashion trend that comes to mind is the tight, skinny jeans. Jeans are supposed to be your casual go to wardrobe item to wear when you just want to relax . These tight skinny jeans that we see all over the fashion magazines these days look anything but relaxing. I imagine the women wearing them feel like their legs are wrapped in sausage casings.
But I say, to each her own! If you want to sacrifice feeling good for looking good, that is your business. But did you know one very popular fashion trend can actually be bad for your health? Yes it is true. I am talking about high heels. Many women wear high heels because they are in style or they feel they make their legs look more attractive. But wearing high heels on a regular basis can do permanent damage to many parts of your body. Below are just a few ways heels can be bad for your health.
Posture – Wearing high heels alters a woman’s posture. Your center of gravity is thrown off by wearing heels and takes your spine and hips out of alignment. Walking around with your spine and hips out of alignment day after day can lead to back, hip, and pelvic pain and problems in your future.
Pressure – Wearing high heels puts a lot of pressure on the inside of the knee. Not surprisingly, the inner knee is a common site for arthritis among women and wearing high heels may be to blame. Pressure on the knee joint may be increase by as much as thirty percent in women who choose to wear high heels. Pressure from wearing high heels is also increased on the ball of the foot, or the forefoot. Obviously, the higher the heel you wear, the greater the increase in this pressure.
Other Points of Concern – Wearing high heels may also shorten and tighten your calf muscles, thus making them more susceptible to pain and injuries. The increased pressure on the ball of your foot caused by wearing high heels may also cause bunions. Bunions are painful bone growths that may require surgery to correct. Wearing high heels on a consistent basis may also cause a toe condition called hammertoes. Hammertoe is a condition in which the smaller toes are pushed into a bent position and will not straighten out even when a shoe is not being worn.
